paper, cuts & ink:
Joseph Segaran moved to The Netherlands in 2006 and began an instant love affair
with the city of Amsterdam. The inspiration for Joseph’s art comes directly from
the beauty and the wealth of architecture that Amsterdam has to offer.
Nobody who lives in this city can escape it’s wonderful architecture; The rows of
elegant canal houses from the Dutch ‘Golden Age’ (the 17th Century), the decadent
eighteenth century theatres and department stores, the towers and churches or the
unique ‘Amsterdamse school’ architecture of the early 1900’s. Especially awe-inspiring
for Joseph, is the way that all of these buildings stand side-by-side, proudly displayed
along the canals and streets of Amsterdam. This can be seen across the city on Amsterdam’s
famous rings of canals, the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel
and streets such as Damrak and Rokin. Joseph Segaran’s artwork captures the city
of Amsterdam using three main media: papercuts, drawing and polaroid photography.
Joseph often works on commission, producing papercuts or drawings of favourite canals
and buildings or for bespoke house portraits. For more information please contact
